Deep Cleaning

What is a deep cleaning?

Deep Cleaning is a specific type of cleaning called “scaling in the presence of generalized moderate or severe gingival inflammation”. It’s a treatment that goes a little beyond a regular cleaning (called prophylaxis) and is designed for people who have gum disease, but not advanced enough to need surgery or more intensive treatment.

Here’s a breakdown:

  • Scaling is when the dentist or hygienist removes plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) from the teeth, especially below the gum line, where regular brushing can’t reach.
  • Gingival inflammation means your gums are swollen, red, and may bleed when you brush. This often happens because plaque has built up and irritated the gums.
  • The “generalized moderate or severe” part means that the swelling or irritation is spread across a large portion of the gums—not just in one or two areas.

Who needs this type of cleaning?

People who have moderate to severe gum disease (gingivitis), but not yet advanced enough to have bone loss or severe tissue damage (that would require more invasive procedures like surgery or deep cleanings under anesthesia), are good candidates for D4346. Symptoms might include:

  • Swollen, red, or bleeding gums
  • Bad breath
  • Gums that feel tender or sore

This type of cleaning helps to reduce inflammation, improve gum health, and prevent the disease from progressing further.
